New Cafe: Syrup * Desserts

leave a comment »

I’ve walked by this place, “Syrup  Desserts* now for about a month. It wasn’t until a friend mentioned how delicious their chocolate treats and coffee was, that I paid it any mind.

I had some time this afternoon to take a break and I walked right around the corner to the new cafe.

A bit more than just coffee drinks and pastries, Syrup Desserts has cakes, mouse, pastries, cookies, Italian ice cream, and other sweet delectable. They brew various coffee’s throughout the day and offer a variety of coffee drinks, teas and sparkling waters in a quiet inner setting.

Upstairs or down it’s a step above the run of the  mill coffee shops that have opened up around downtown. I can remember four  years ago when I had to hike for a beverage before these little cafe’s starting popping up.

Service was friendly, talkative and professional.

Loved the ambiance and “customer care”. :)

Article: Report Says Homelessness Down 38%.

New Plan to House People Emerges as Study Finds Fewer Sleeping on Streets
by Ryan Vaillancourt, Staff Writer
Published: Friday, October 30, 2009 4:33 PM PDT

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES – Despite the ongoing recession and soaring unemployment, a new study says that homelessness in Los Angeles County has decreased by 38% since 2007.The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority conducted the count over three days in January, enlisting about 3,000 people to walk census tracts throughout the county (Glendale, Long Beach and Pasadena did their own counts). The study found that the number of people homeless on any given night in the region has shrunk from 68,808 to 42,694.

Mike Arnold, executive director of LAHSA, hesitated to credit the reduction to any particular program or trend, but said the drop comes as public agencies have focused more on getting people housed than offering other stop-gap services.

“We have really a remarkable group of agencies who have transformed themselves from making homelessness more comfortable to actually focusing on outcomes,” Arnold said.

The biennial count is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which uses the statistics as a guideline for distributing federal funds to support homeless services.

The report is not complete: LAHSA is still analyzing its data, looking into changes specific to certain demographics and geographic areas in the city, including Skid Row.

Fashion Walk is Tonight

leave a comment »

Hi there.

I noticed a little comment from Brady Westwater in the queue with some information on the “Fashion Walk”.

Is downtown a new runway? Let’s find out, Fashion Walk is tonight.

<<Forwarded Message>>

Fashion Walk is Tonight

…. and it has the potential of becoming the next Art Walk by bringing much higher income buyers to our area each Third Thursday. But to make it happen – I need help in promoting it to everyone in both the fashion and the arts communities, Below is the website – and I would greatly appreciate it if you can invite everyone on your mailing lists to come Downtown between 5:30 and 10 PM tonight. There is a downloadable map on the website – just like Art Walk – and if you are around and could be open at least part of tonight – that would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Support a school drive for low-income families, children and young adults living with HIV.

leave a comment »

You can help!

Back to School 09
Santee Court Lofts is helping to gather donated school supplies for low-income children and teens living with HIV. Supporting the Pasadena AIDS Service Center we’re driving to gather much needed school essentials for low income families.

“Who am I helping?”

31 Preschool Students
45 Elementary Students
49 Middle School Students
72 High School Students
31 College Students

What supplies are needed?

  • back packs
  • 3-ring binders
  • art kits
  • college-ruled paper
  • wide-ruled paper
  • special-lined paper
  • pocket folders
  • subject dividers
  • calculators
  • glue sticks
  • markers
  • highlighters
  • crayons
  • coloring books
  • protractors
  • drafting pads
  • pens
  • pencils
  • pencil boxes
  • erasers
  • locker mirrors
  • combination locks
  • 12″ rulers
  • small 6″ rulers
  • art supplies
  • reusable water bottles

If you can take a few moments to find some of these items at your local store, back-to-school sales or even ask your office or employer, friends and family it would be a tremendous help for kids in need.

“What else can I do?”

You can also donate directly to the cause through Carlos Cortez, who will use the money to purchase these much needed supplies. Kids love color, think art supplies and fun materials to make things. Elementary school children need all sorts of things, and high school teens too. Remember high school people. Don’t forget the young adults in college!

Make checks payable to Carlos Cortez as he will be purchasing these supplies.

Where do I donate?

Bring your donations down to the leasing office at Santee Court Lofts! Any of the staff at the office can accept your donations. If you are making a monetary donation to the cause, make sure you write the check to Carlos Cortez and when you arrive at the leasing office be sure to fill out a tax form that Andrew can supply you with.

You are supplying necessities to those who are carrying forward as the young leaders, friends and family for many. It is more than just a donation of items, this is something from the heart. It is giving and that selfless endowment of simple materials can make a world of difference.

Thank you for helping.

New Local -I mean REALLY local- “Watering hole” needs your support!

leave a comment »

Hey there!

I just got a message from Brandon about a potential new bar in the old Crabby Joes! Sounds great right? Right around the corner. Within stumbling distance! :)

Brandon Wrote…

Hi Santee Court!

Just a reminder that our new proposed local watering hole at 656 S. Main needs our support.  It’s already been protested by the United Coalition East Prevention Project (UCEPP) and they’re a nightmare with delaying, or even preventing new bars and restaurants downtown. If you just mail in a letter with the template attached it makes a big difference.  Their public hearing is on August 25th.  Thanks everybody.

You may have noticed receiving a “Notice of Public Hearing” in your mail in last few days from the City of Los Angeles.  This Notice is for a new Bar/Lounge located at 656 S. Main St. at the former “Crabby Joe’s” site just around the corner from us.  It has it’s Public Hearing at City Hall on Tuesday, August 25th, at 9:00 a.m. in Room 1020 on the 10th floor.

There is a significant and growing movement against the establishment of more restaurants and bars serving alcohol downtown because of the belief of “over-saturation”.  Us residents who live downtown, know that this is not the case.  And contrary to what many may think, statistics show that creating a vibrant street life with restaurants, bars, and even nightclubs, actually deters crime by keeping the street light, bright and active, with security present many times.  Most people keep there “over-saturation” understanding based upon the suburban sprawl model, and not the dense urban neighborhoods where we like to call home.

All the best,
Brandon

The template letter is below. Please pass this to all your friends, co-workers, neighbors and family in the area. It’s important that we bring new and diverse businesses into our little neck of downtown. It encourages other businesses, night and street life. It’s vital!

The letter is below. Please download, fill in and mail away!

UGH MOSQUITOES!

leave a comment »

(Image from Wikipedia).

These eternal pests! They drive me, you, and everyone crazy! Buzzing in our ears, bites on the arms, legs, hands, feet, and on the face. Face bites are the worst, in my opinion. Little irritating flying insects and they are everywhere as you may have noticed.

The EPA has some suggestions for mosquito control.

What you can do to control mosquitoes around the home

  1. Remove their habitat (where they live and breed)
    • Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed.
    • Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats.
    • Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt.
    • Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating.

Aside from these “environments” have you noticed them in other interesting places, like hanging out on your door waiting to get in? We have over here in the Brownstein-Louis building. They are tricky little suckers. Literally.

Be sure to check your door going in and out of your loft. A quick knock on the door before exiting or entering should shoo them away. Our windows are closed. For awhile I was wondering how they were getting in, until this little discovery.

Repellents

There are many recommended chemical repellents to prevent and control mosquitos, many of which we don’t want to use in the loft itself. I mean who wants to sleep in a residue of mosquito killer.

About.com has some suggestions you may try and some tips that may help to keep the bites down.

Natural Repellents

It’s very easy to make your own natural mosquito repellent. These natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 2 hours) and higher concentrations than DEET. Because of the differences between types of mosquitoes, products that contain multiple repellents tend to be more effective than those containing a single ingredient. As you can see, natural repellents tend to be volatile plant oils.

  • Citronella Oil
  • Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
  • Cinnamon Oil
  • Castor Oil
  • Rosemary Oil
  • Lemongrass Oil
  • Cedar Oil
  • Peppermint Oil
  • Clove Oil
  • Geranium Oil
  • Possibly Oils from Verbena, Pennyroyal, Lavender, Pine, Cajeput, Basil, Thyme, Allspice, Soybean, and Garlic

Another plant-derived substance, pyrethrum, is an insecticide. Pyrethrum comes from the flowers of the daisy Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium.

THIEVES that works very well. Mixing a bit of the essential oil and putting it on the exposed skin will keep them away. At the loft we also drop it into the atomizer to reduce their tendency to want to get in, but applied topically THIEVES is really effective. It contains…

Thieves essential oil blend is a proprietary blend of:

  • Clove
  • Lemon
  • Cinnamon Bark
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary

If you are interested in the Essential Oil, let me know. :) I swear we wear this oil at night, mixed with some lotion before bed and the mosquitoes leave us alone!

Full article on About.com (article “How Things Work”) can be found here.

Remember to keep your windows and doors shut. Watch for those sheisty suckers on the door and avoid perfumes, scented lotions, heavy sweating and sun screens. Wash them off before bed because they are sweet scents for these blood suckers!

Just me,

Santee
